The role of the dealer

If blackjack is so popular, it is precisely because it is different from all the other casino games.

Its originality resides more specifically in the essential role played by the croupier, who is also called the banker, dealer, etc.

Contrary to other casino games, the role of the dealer in blackjack is more active: they are actually a player themselves. They are even more than that, they are all the other players' opponent.

It is against them, and however thanks to them, that the game can unfold.

A card dealer

The croupier in blackjack has an undeniable technical function. They need to excel at dealing the cards, displaying irreproachable speed and dexterity. Besides the rules of blackjack, they need to master the use of the shoe: their indispensable tool of automatic card dealing.

In front of them, the half-moon-shaped blackjack table stretches, comprised of seven spaces, also called spots, where up to three players per space can sit.

Then, they put on their banker hat and control each player's bet strictly.

They are the object of everyone's attention: all their comings and goings are scrutinised and analysed at all times. Then, in a very skilful and furtive manner, they deal a card face up to each player, starting with the one sitting on their left and finishing with themselves.

The shoe makes another round to give every player another card, face up, except for the croupier. The latter then turns to the player sitting on their left and lets them choose between different options specific to the rules of blackjack: card, stay, insurance, split or double.

In the first case, their role is once again key: they need to deal cards to the player who made this choice, until they stop them.

It is on the croupier's single card, face up, that the other players elaborate their strategies...

Once all the players around the table have finished their round, the croupier becomes a player in their own right, the opponent of the whole group in front of them. The suspense is at its peak...

The second card they are now drawing, and which will constitute their hand, can set up a completely new deal. If the combination of their two cards does not make a blackjack, they continue to draw cards until they reach a value ranging between 17 and 21 points.

From now on, the game is in their hands, or should we say their hand.

The rule is simple: above 21, they “bust” and the other players still in the game win the croupier's bet.

However, if they have a hand ranging between 17 and 21 points, all the players whose hand is over theirs win the equivalent of the croupier's bet. If not, the players lose their bets.

The croupier then puts on their banker hat once again, for the payment and reimbursement of the bets. A new deal can now start.
